Coronado Mayor to Tackle Critical Issues at Mayors Conference
Resolution to be presented to increase federal funding for cross-border sewage

CORONADO, CA (June 26, 2019) – Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey will join more than 200 mayors from across the country this week to share ideas and address important challenges facing their communities, including the cross-border sewage issue in San Diego County.

Bailey will put forth a resolution at the U.S. Conference of Mayors annual meeting seeking federal funding for infrastructure improvements along the U.S.-Mexico border. This vital funding can be used to stem the pollution on local beaches that poses health, environmental and safety concerns. The resolution is co-authored and co-sponsored by San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

“Taking this issue to the Conference of Mayors will continue our efforts to raise awareness of the problem and generate national support for long-term solutions,” Bailey said. “Passing a resolution with the Conference means the mayors of America are with us in this effort, and makes project funding a national priority.”

Bailey will appear before the environmental and international affairs committees to support the resolution.

The conference presents an opportunity for mayors to propose resolutions and shape policy debate on a number of pressing issues, including homelessness, Veterans affairs, telecommunications, housing and transportation. Policy positions adopted at the meeting are forwarded to the President and Congress.

“I look forward to hearing what other cities are doing to address some of these common issues that affect all of us and presenting a united voice to federal officials who can help make a positive difference in the lives of our residents,” Bailey said.

The 87th annual meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors will be held June 28-July 1 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Conference of Mayors is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with a population of 30,000 or larger.
