Iwai: Expressions of Seasonal Celebrations in Japan
Japanese Friendship Garden

The Japanese Friendship Garden is happy to share some of its permanent cultural collection with library visitors. These art objects, enriched with Japanese historical background, celebrate "the beauty of the seasons and the poignancy of their inevitable evanescence through the many festivals and rituals that fill [the] year."

Co-produced by the library, and juried and curated by the City of Coronado's Cultural Arts Commission, this exhibition currently on view in the library's original building, the Spreckels Reading Room, features 49 plein air paintings by artists from all over San Diego County.

Spreckels The Library: Art, Architecture and Artifacts
Coronado Public Library Historical Archives

Open since February 2020 (i.e. pre-pandemic) to commemorate the Coronado Public Library's 130th Anniversary, this exhibit features historic photographs and memorabilia that tell the story of the library's history, from its inception in 1890 to present day. Notable artifacts include the handwritten Library Constitution, photos of the original Coronado Beach Library, and architectural drawings from different expansions and renovations that took place over the years.

Past



Past exhibits have included World War II in Words and Pictures; Designed by Edith Head; the Art of Folk Costume; and L. Frank Baum and the Hotel del Coronado.  A large diorama case at the entrance to the Children's Library features displays as diverse as the "Holiday Animated Window" and the "Old General Store".
