Coronado's Free Summer Shuttle, Cays Curbside Service

Coronado’s free summer shuttle service is back. Beginning May 27 and for a fifth consecutive year, the City will offer courtesy rides to residents and visitors along its busy commercial district as well as provide new options for Cays residents.

The Village and Cays shuttle service will operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, September 4. Both are designed to help keep people out of their vehicles during the City’s peak summer season to improve mobility.

The City contracts with the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System to operate the Free Summer Shuttle for Village bus service at 15-minute intervals along the existing MTS 904 route. The service offers free rides to passengers from Coronado’s civic center to the Hotel del Coronado, the beach, the Library and Spreckels Park, through the downtown and bayfront shopping and dining area to the Coronado Ferry Landing and Marriott Coronado Island Resort and back. Buses will run from 8:57 a.m. to 9:42 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and one hour later Friday and Saturday.

New Shuttle Schedule

New this year, the City has teamed up with Loews Coronado Bay Resort to operate the free Cays Curbside Shuttle Service. Cays residents can text (619) 865-2301 to reach the Loews valet desk to request to be picked up between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., seven days a week. A Loews courtesy golf cart will then be dispatched to pick up passengers right from their homes and take them to the resort where they can catch a ride on the Loews Free Silver Strand Summer Shuttle into the village, which runs every 30 minutes, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days per week. Once dropped off, passengers can grab the Free Summer Shuttle to get around the Village. To return to Loews, hop on the Free Silver Strand Summer Shuttle to get a ride back to your home on the courtesy golf cart.

In addition to the Cays Curbside Service, the City also will contract with MTS to provide special free bus service on the Fourth of July for Cays residents. This free bus will operate from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. in 30-minute intervals serving Cays residents from the bus stop across from the Cays Fire Station to the turnaround at the Community Center. As parking is at a premium on the Fourth of July, this will provide a convenient alternative to driving for Cays residents.

For Village residents, the Free Summer Shuttle operating hours will be expanded on the Fourth of July by one hour on each end of the schedule to accommodate the large crowds and traffic congestion related to the parade and fireworks show. The July 4 hours will be 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Coronado Tourism Improvement District, now known as Discover Coronado, has once again graciously agreed to pay to wrap the four buses. This year, the group will update the Volkswagen “beach” bus theme and wrap the buses at a cost of approximately $25,000. Total projected costs to the City for the Free Summer Shuttle and Cays Curbside Service for this summer are $157,500.

There will be one change to the Free Summer Shuttle layover location in the Village. In past years, passengers had to transfer to another bus or wait for the next shuttle at the bus stop between the civic center and Coronado Shores. This year, the layover is being moved to the bus stop at Second Street and Glorietta Boulevard near the Marriott. The change will take effect the same day as an MTS system-wide schedule update on June 11.

The City’s shuttle service has proved popular among locals and visitors. The first year of operation resulted in a 506 percent increase from the regular MTS 904 service. Every year since, ridership has increased on average 36 percent.
