Parks Maintenance

The Park Maintenance Division performs weekly mowing, edging and debris removal in all City-maintained parks, as well as providing landscape maintenance around City facilities such as City Hall and the Community Center, the Police Department, the Library, and Public Services. Division staff repair and adjust irrigation systems and perform tree pruning on park trees as needed. Janitorial contractors clean all park restrooms daily, including weekends. Trash cans are dumped as needed throughout the week and on weekends.

The Division adheres to the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for the control of all unwanted pests. The emphasis is on monitoring pest populations and to treat at a point where populations exceed an acceptable threshold. Treatments center on the use of the least toxic methods which will reduce pest populations to an acceptable level.

Recycling of green waste through the use of mulches is one way in which the Parks Division helps to divert green materials from the landfills. Green waste materials not used within the City are transported to a green waste recycling center.

Weed abatement is performed in right-of-way areas such as the Silver Strand bike path, the Fourth and Alameda greenbelt, and City property fronting the Coronado Yacht Club.

Nature's Bridge to Discovery, a native plant community incorporating observation decks, pathways and interpretive sculptures is also a part of the Parks Division's maintenance responsibilities.

The Tree division performs weekly scheduled pruning of street trees throughout the City. The City is divided into nine districts which are scheduled for pruning on a four-year rotational schedule (canopy trees) and yearly (Palm trees). The Tree section also responds to citizen requests for street tree pruning through a work order system. Work orders can be submitted on-line, or by calling the Public Services Department. Additionally, the Tree section responds to emergency callouts through an on-call duty leader who is accessible outside of working hours by contacting the Coronado Police dispatcher (normal working hours are 7 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday).
