Caltrans Bridge Meetings Set

CORONADO, CA (August 9, 2017) -- The California Department of Transportation, which manages and maintains the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, has invited the community to two open house meetings the agency is hosting to receive input and comments on potential suicide deterrents on the bridge. One will be held in Barrio Logan on Wednesday, August 9, and the other in Coronado on Thursday, August 10.

The City of Coronado supports the meetings and thanks Caltrans for the workshop-style gatherings that will allow for the community to learn about the agency’s feasibility plan and deterrents used on other bridges, share their views, and learn about the next steps in an informal setting.

The Coronado City Council voted in 2015 to support efforts to eliminate or reduce suicides on the bridge. Council members also agreed in March to send a letter of support for Senate Bill 480. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Ben Hueso, D-San Diego, seeks to address safety barriers on portions of the bridge following a tragic accident involving a truck that flipped over the barrier on the Interstate 5 connector and landed in Chicano Park below killing four people and injuring nine. The City supports the goal of SB 480 to conduct a bridge safety study that would include looking at the overall safety of the bridge including speeding, guardrails and suicides.

Average weekday traffic counts show up to 93,000 passenger vehicles crossing the bridge daily, with up to 75,000 on weekends. The bridge is a critical connection from San Diego to Coronado and Naval Base Coronado, one of the region’s top employers. In addition to supporting efforts by the state to prevent suicides, the City also would consider backing any plans to make the bridge safer for those who traverse it.

The meetings will be held at the following locations:

Barrio Logan
Wednesday, August 9, 6-8 p.m.
San Diego Continuing Education, Cesar E. Chavez Campus
1901 Main St.

Thursday, August 10, 6-8 p.m.
Coronado Public Library’s Winn Room
640 Orange Ave.
