City Begins Annual Preventive Street Maintenance

CORONADO, CA (September 28, 2016)Work has begun on this year's annual Street Preventive Maintenance Program to upgrade roadways around Coronado. The work should be completed next week.

Every year, as part of the annual program, the City slurry seals approximately one-seventh of its streets on a rotating basis. Slurry seal is a preventive maintenance treatment that consists of a thin layer of asphalt and sand mixture applied to the road surface which extends the life of the road by protecting it from oxidation.

First Street, Strand Way, the Bayshore Bike Path from Fiddler’s Cove to the Coronado Cays entrance, and residential streets in the Country Club area will be experiencing temporary road closures between September 29 and October 5. Residents are asked to make necessary arrangements for the day their street will be slurry sealed as vehicle access to and from their homes may not be possible between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Potholes in asphalt streets are caused by sunlight, precipitation, and wear. Sunlight breaks down the protective layer of asphalt. Water penetrates the surface of the pavement and works its way into the base, which causes settlement and fatigue. Heavy traffic volume accelerates this process. Slurry seal helps protect the top layer from breakdown and preserves the street. Preventative maintenance is essential to maximize the life cycle of pavement.

Pavement markings are also repainted, improving visibility at night. See maps below. Dates are subject to change. The following areas will be slurry sealed:

  • First Street (Sept. 30, Oct. 1, and Oct. 3)
