Coronado Honored with Voice of the People Award

CORONADO, CA (October 17, 2019) The City of Coronado has earned a “Voice of the People Award for Excellence in Foundations,” an honor given to cities that best listen and act for the benefit of their communities.

The Voice of the People Awards are handed out by the International City/County Management Association and National Research Center to the communities with the highest or most improved ratings as voiced by their own residents. Nominees are identified from the top-performing or most improved communities that conducted The National Community Survey in 2018.

Coronado residents reported the highest ratings for the Foundations category compared with all other participating jurisdictions. This includes overall appearance, 96% positive; overall quality of life, 97% positive; overall feeling of safety, 97% positive; and place to retire, 82% positive.

The City will accept the award at the Association’s 105th annual conference in Nashville next week. The National Community Survey enables local governments to gather information at a reasonable cost ($23,985) from residents and use it to measure a community’s services and its quality of life. The results are reviewed with staff to serve as a guide.

“We are proud to be honored with this award,” said City Manager Blair King. “It represents a true reflection of how our residents value the City and the services it provides. Of course, we always will strive to be better and look for ways to improve livability in Coronado by continuing to listen to our residents and working together to make a great community better.”

Through continued feedback from the City’s “Ask Coronado” app, citizen surveys, community participation and social media outreach, the City works to listen to residents’ concerns and keep an open mind about future needs or areas that need improvement. Additionally, the City’s financial resources have given City leaders the ability to meet the communities’ expectations for high customer service standards.
