Tina Christiansen Named Interim Community Development Director

CORONADO, CA (December 28, 2017) City Manager Blair King has named Tina Christiansen, who has 27 years of experience in municipal government, to the position of interim director of Community Development while a full recruitment is conducted.

Christiansen, a registered architect, is a former Community Development director for the cities of Solana Beach and Irvine. She also has served as a building inspection department director and chief building official for San Diego and Boulder, Colorado. She is also a well-regarded local artist.

She will temporarily replace Rachel Hurst, who announced her retirement earlier this month. Christiansen is expected to take over beginning Monday, January 8.

The Community Development Department provides administrative and technical support for Coronado’s planning and building needs through the City’s General Plan, Local Coastal Plan, zoning codes, and building inspection. The department also provides long-range planning support by working to anticipate changing community needs and facilitating the development of policies, goals and objectives.

King said he has begun working on a permanent replacement for the position.

“This is an opportunity to have steady leadership as we launch our search for the important post of Community Development director,” King said. “The director oversees work to continually improve the livability and vibrancy of our community. I hope to hire a new director within the next few months.”

The department also oversees the Successor Agency to the City’s former redevelopment agency, the City’s publicly owned affordable housing inventory, and Coronado’s Historic Preservation Program.

Community Development operates on a $2.2 million annual budget and consists of nine full-time employees including one senior planner, two associate planners, one assistant planner, one building inspection supervisor, one building inspector, two department technicians and one administrative secretary.
