Free Summer Shuttle service is in full swing at the program’s halfway point. The City would like to share some numbers. Although the Fourth of July was a busy day, ridership is still not back to pre-pandemic levels. However, the good news is the City is seeing an increase in visitors relative to last year.
The free service, sponsored by the City and Discover Coronado, kicked off the Friday before Memorial Day and served 31,799 passengers through the first week of July. Ridership in June represented only 56% of all riders in the same month in 2019 but was up 36% from June 2021, when service kicked off June 6. There were 60% fewer riders on July 4 in the Village area this year compared to 2019. However, ridership on the Cays Special Fourth of July Shuttle saw an increase in ridership of 64%. The July 4 shuttle service got Cays residents to the Community Center, with stops at Liberty Military Housing, where they could catch the shuttles into the Village area.
The City continues to encourage residents and visitors to leave their cars at home and use the Free Summer Shuttle to run errands, get to the beach or dinner. The program runs through Labor Day, Sept. 5.
