Caltrans is reminding residents that the second phase of the I-5 bridge repair work over Route 163 begins next Friday, September 29 at 9 pm. Crews will reduce the northbound I-5 freeway to one lane at I-15 to Route 163. The closure is expected to continue until 5 am on Monday, October 2. Caltrans is encouraging drivers to plan ahead and add additional time needed to reach their destination.
SAN DIEGO — Caltrans has scheduled the second of two major 56-hour weekend lane closures through downtown San Diego on Interstate 5 (I-5) to repair the northbound bridge deck over State Route 163 (SR-163) on Friday September 29 at 9 p.m. through Monday, October 2 at 5 a.m. Traffic will begin to taper after the northbound I-5 Mile of Cars off-ramp in National City. Successive lanes will be closed at the West Plaza Boulevard off-ramp and the Osborne Street off-ramp.
One lane of northbound I-5 will remain open to access State Route 15 (SR-15), State Route 75 (SR-75), State Route 94 (SR-94), and State Route 163 (SR-163) as well one lane through the work area. Northbound I-5 will remain accessible from the eastbound State Route 75 (SR-75) connector. Some on-ramp, off-ramp, and connectors to northbound I-5 will be closed to limit the amount of traffic using the single lane through the construction area:
Westbound SR-94 connector for the duration of the work
- F Street on-ramp for the duration of the work
- B Street on-ramp 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Pershing Drive on-ramp 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- 19th Street on-ramp 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- 6th Street off-ramp for the duration of the work
Northbound I-5 through motorists are advised to take alternate routes to avoid traffic delays north of National City through downtown.
Messaging signs will be in place to encourage alternate travel and advise of closures. SR-163 will remain open to traffic entering and exiting downtown.
