[ARCHIVED] Avenue of Heroes Ceremony Takes Place on May 20

This year, Armed Forces Day takes place on Saturday, May 20 and coincides with Coronado’s own Avenue of Heroes ceremony. The City of Coronado's local military recognition honors “hometown heroes” and the community is invited to the ceremony on May 20 at 10:30 am in the Coronado Public High School Performing Arts Center, located at 650 D Avenue. 

The Avenue of Heroes program has honored 230 military service members since its inception in 2014. The Avenue of Heroes program is organized by the City of Coronado and the Avenue of Heroes Committee.  

May 20, 2023 Group XVI Honorees are:

  • James G. Callaway
  • Charles W. Cole
  • Charles E. ‘Chuck’ Cuson
  • Edwin J. ‘Doc’ Friesen
  • Robert Byron Fuller
  • Lowell A. Grimaud
  • Maurice L. ‘Swede’ Grimaud
  • Clarence R. Johnson
  • George P. Lawler
  • John W. ‘Jack’ McCormick
  • John W. McCormick, Jr.
  • George Morgan
  • Robert A.H. Murline
  • Arthur D. Ronimus, Jr.
  • John E. Schaefer, Jr.

During the ceremony, the honorees will have their biographies read and they or their families will be presented with commemorative mini-banners and asked to come forward for photos. (News Release: April 30, 2023(External link))
