The City Council accepted a gift of public art at a meeting this week from the League of Wives Memorial Project Foundation.
The bronze sculpture, created by artists Christopher Slatoff and Elizabeth Pollnow, features the late Sybil Stockdale, a Coronado resident who led the fight for better treatment of their husbands, Vietnam War Prisoners of War, and their release.
At a meeting July 19, the Council allocated up to $100,000 for the installation of the new artwork. Council members chose a site in Star Park Circle and directed staff and the Cultural Arts Commission to review other more prominent locations to see if there is a better location.
The League of Wives Memorial Project plans to raise funds this year to purchase the art and dedicate the memorial next year. Coronado is the birthplace of the League of Wives, a group of military wives whose aviator husbands were shot down, captured, and imprisoned during the Vietnam War. The six-foot tall sculpture features Stockdale and other women who stood up to military protocols that insisted they be silent.
