Summer Shuttle

Summer Shuttle Update (July 2022)

A sure sign that Coronado is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic is the return of the Free Summer Shuttle along Orange Avenue. Join the City, supporters and sponsors of the program at the kick-off event on Sunday, June 6, at 1 pm at Spreckels Park near the Coronado Public Library.

The complimentary service was launched in 2013 but was discontinued last year. The classic VW bus-themed artwork is back and has been updated to reflect face covering mandates on public transit. Masks that fully cover mouths and noses are required to board the Free Summer Shuttle.

Beginning June 6, residents, guests, and local business operators will see the familiar Free Summer Shuttle buses along the Metropolitan Transit System's 904 Route from the Coronado Shores and City Hall to the Coronado Ferry Landing and Coronado Island Marriott Resort and Spa. The shuttles run in 15-minute intervals and is free to ride. The program is funded by the City and Discover Coronado underwrites the cost to design and install the unique and colorful wrapping.

Shuttle Bus Driving Through Intersection

Service on the Free Summer Shuttle began the Friday before the Memorial Day weekend. The City worked with Discover Coronado, which funds the wraps every year, on the design. Shuttles will run through Sept. 5 from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and one hour later Friday and Saturday.

The City has contracted with the Metropolitan Transit System to provide special free bus service on Monday, July 4, for Cays residents. It will operate from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. in 30-minute intervals from the northeast corner of Coronado Cays and Grande Caribe to the southeast corner of Avenue de las Arenas and Silver Strand Boulevard. Stops will be made upon request at Liberty Military Housing at Leyte Road on the special July 4 free bus service from the Cays to the Village. As parking is at a premium on the Fourth of July, this will provide a convenient alternative to driving for Cays residents. Note that the Free Summer Shuttle in the Village will operate from 8:00am to 11:00pm on Monday, July 4. Visit https://bit.ly/SummerShuttleBrochure(External link) for more information.

Free MTS day passes are available for Coronado Cays residents at the Coronado Cays HOA Office throughout the summer until September 5.

In March, the Coronado City Council authorized the 2022 Free Summer Shuttle Program, which will operate this year from May 27 through Sept. 5. An agreement with the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System allows the use of four MTS buses along the existing Route 904 around the Village area of Coronado at a cost to the City of $192,312. Buses will run in 15-minute intervals. Once again, with the City’s support, this will be a free service to all passengers. In addition, the City will purchase 1,000 MTS day passes for distribution to the Coronado Cays for use during the program. The City also will operate free bus service from the Coronado Cays to the Community Center on Monday, July 4. Coronado has annually provided free shuttle service to the community since 2013 except for one year during the pandemic.

Since 2013, the City of Coronado has offered the Free Summer Shuttle and it is back for its ninth year. Beginning Friday, May 27, residents, guests, and local business operators will see the familiar Free Summer Shuttle buses along the MTS 904 Route from the Coronado Shores and City Hall to the Coronado Ferry Landing and Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa. The shuttles run in 15-minute intervals and is free to ride. The program is funded by the City and Discover Coronado underwrites the cost to design and install the unique and colorful wrapping. It has been a great public amenity whether using it to run errands, get to the beach, visit local shops or just get around town. Residents and visitors are able to avoid traffic and searching for parking during the busy summer months.

Free MTS day passes will be available to Coronado Cays residents at the Coronado Cays Homeowners Association office. The City also has contracted with MTS to provide special free bus service on Monday, July 4, for Cays residents that will operate from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. in 30-minute intervals from the northeast corner of Coronado Cays and Grande Caribe to the southerly corner of Avenue De Las Arenas and Silver Strand Blvd. Stops will be made upon request at Silver Strand Military Housing on the special July 4 free bus service from the Cays to the Village. As parking is at a premium on the Fourth of July, this will provide a convenient alternative to driving for Cays residents. See the Free Cays Fourth of July Shuttle Operating Schedule under the documents tab.

The new bus wrap is a departure from the red vintage Volkswagen bus design that had covered the shuttle buses for the past six years. The design may feel familiar to many in the community as it is based on a public art mural installed on the old Cora Mart building until Vons started its recent renovation. Discover Coronado sponsors the bus wraps. The Free Summer Shuttle will run through Labor Day, Sept. 5, daily from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and one hour later on Friday and Saturday.

Interior Ads

Coronado is offering interior advertising space on the City’s popular Free Summer Shuttle buses to local businesses and groups.

Four shuttles will operate from Friday, May 27, to Monday, Sept. 5. The shuttles typically run from the Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the summer program, the Metropolitan Transit System will enforce existing COVID-19 protocols. Ads are highly visible and seen by an estimated 1,000 riders per day. They are an effective way to reach visitors as well as locals. Ads may promote Coronado tourism and the community, and can include services, products and events that appeal to residents and visitors, such as special events, local history and culture, local art and artists, and offerings from local businesses and retail stores where visitors can shop or buy. Ads are displayed for a minimum of one month. They must comply with the stated goals of the Coronado Summer Shuttle program and Metropolitan Transit System ad regulations.

Cost is $125 per month per ad per bus for organizations and businesses, and $75 for nonprofit groups. Advertisers can reserve a maximum of 12 ads, or one ad per bus per month for the full Summer Shuttle program. Ad specifications and deadlines can be found here. The order form can be found here. Advertisers must provide all artwork for ads by or before each deadline. For more information or to place an ad, contact Howard Lee at (619) 522-2423 or email [email protected]
