Mary Clifford Named New City Clerk
CORONADO, Calif. (November 18, 2013) - Mary Clifford, Executive Assistant to the Coronado City Manager, has been selected to fill the City Clerk position, it was announced today.
Clifford was selected after a full and open recruitment for the position, which is being vacated by retiring City Clerk Linda Hascup. Of the 172 applications the City received for the City Clerk position, eight were invited to interview for the job.
"We had an outstanding pool of applicants but Mary is the best choice for City Clerk, having served as an interim City Clerk twice in the recent past," said City Manager Blair King. "Because of her experience and current Deputy City Clerk position, it will be a seamless transition."
Clifford will serve as interim City Clerk beginning December 16 and will assume the City Clerk role on January 2. In her current position, Clifford has worked as executive assistant in the City Manager's Office, providing administrative support to two city managers since 2002. She was Interim City Clerk in 2001 and 2004. She is a Notary Public.
Previously, Clifford was an administrative secretary in Coronado's Administrative Services Department and, before that, was an executive assistant and executive secretary, as well as a senior clerk stenographer in New York State.
Linda Hascup's last day will be December 13. Hascup has worked for the City since 1999 and held the City Clerk title since her appointment in 2005. Prior to City Clerk, Hascup was an administrative secretary for the Community Development Department. She will retire as a Certified Municipal Clerk.
It is the job of the City Clerk to prepare and distribute the agenda for City Council meetings, record legislative actions, ordinances, resolutions, and minutes; maintain custody of official City documents and records; prepare for and conduct City elections; provide information regarding local and state laws; and perform a variety of administrative support functions.
Clifford will be paid $83,105.
