Each week, the City Manager's Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. It can be found on the City's website.

The next City Council meeting is set for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17, at City Hall, 1825 Strand Way. Please note the new City Council meeting start time.


Coronado Art Walk:  The Coronado Art Walk will be held this weekend, September 14-15, at the Ferry Landing.  Hours are from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.  The Art Walk is sponsored by the Coronado Historical Association and features painting, hand crafted jewelry, ceramics, photography, and other forms of art.  The free summer shuttle will be running and will provide a link from the Ferry Landing along the entire length of Orange Avenue to the Community Center. Speed Festival and Car Procession:  Naval Base Coronado is hosting the annual Speed Festival September 21-22, as part of San Diego Fleet Week.  Accompanying the Speed Festival is a low-speed procession from North Island to Coronado Rotary Plaza of select cars participating in the weekend vintage car races.  The cars will be on display along Isabella Avenue near Rotary Plaza from 3:30 to 6 p.m.  The public is invited to get a first-hand look at these vehicles and chat with the owners and drivers.  Viewing of the cars is free. Fire Truck Update:  The Crimson Fire Truck is out of service awaiting inspection and repairs on the "turn-table" that connects the Tractor with the Trailer.  The most recent breakdown came shortly after a top to bottom inspection by the manufacturer.  A loaner Fire Engine has been secured and is in service. 


New Golf Course Website:  The new golf course website has been launched and is now capable of booking a limited number of online advanced tee times per day via the web.  There is also a mobile application at the bottom of the page to book via cell phone.  The name is still the same www.golfcoronado.com.  The golf course is moving into the electronic age in other areas as well.  Coming soon are score cards that will have a mobile application. The site was designed by City staff and built in-house at a fractional cost.  


Special Events Permits:  Special events permits issued for beach and parks scheduled to be held from Saturday, September 14, through Friday, September 20.

Navy Releases Final Environmental Impact StatementThe City has received notice of availability of the Hawaii-Southern California Training and Testing Final Environmental Impact Statement.  The City previously commented on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement and the Navy's response to the City's comments is contained in the Final EIS (Table E.3-1).  Some activities will increase within the Silver Strand Training Complex but they will be off-shore and should not result in impacts to the City or its residents. The Final EIS can be viewed at the public Library or the project website at www.HSTTEIS.com.

Oversight Board
At the Thursday, September 9, Oversight Board Regular Meeting, the members adopted resolutions approving the Administrative Budget and the Recognized Obligation Payment Schedule 13-14B (ROPS 13-14B) for the period January 1 through June 30, 2014, and the Administrative Loan for the Fiscal Year 2013-14.  

Design Review Commission:  On Wednesday, September 11, the Commission approved new signs for Coronado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at 842 Orange Avenue and Chakra Pilates at 1330 Orange Ave., Suite 120.



Toll Plaza Improvements Public Workshop:  The City held a Toll Plaza Improvement project public workshop yesterday to gather public input on desired aesthetic and traffic calming improvements for the toll plaza area.  Staff is currently reviewing the public feedback received at the workshop and will present this information to the City Council at an upcoming meeting.


9/11 Ceremony:  On Wednesday, at 6:53 a.m., the Coronado Fire Department held the annual 9/11 ceremony at the front of the Headquarters station.  Bagpiper (Retired Coronado Fire Captain) Ron Allison initiated the ceremony with all personnel, wearing badge shrouds in honor of the 72 police officers and the 343 firefighters killed on September 11, 2001, assembled at attention in front of the station flagpole.  The Chaplain from the San Diego Fire Department presented the invocation, followed by a moment of silence that was maintained until 6:59 a.m., the time of the South Tower collapse, and then by the ringing of the station bell in three sets of five chimes each. 


Brown Bag Lunch Concert Series:  Classical pianist Jose Gonzalez will be the first performer when the brown bag series resumes today at 12:30 p.m. in the Winn Room.  The series will last 11 weeks and will feature accomplished pianists with varied musical repertories. Youth ProgramsThis week, the tweens made Phyllo dough feather pens on Tuesday, and the middle-schoolers channeled their inner Picassos to create modern art sketches on Wednesday.


Computer NetworkThe Library's wireless network will be upgraded on Monday, September 16.  The wireless network, Internet computers and catalog computers will be unavailable during installation and troubleshooting. 


Annual Pancake BreakfastCoronado's first responders were invited to the annual Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Coronado Retirement Village yesterday morning. 



Rowing and Adult Kayaking Classes:  Basic rowing classes were held at the Boathouse this past weekend where participants learned the mechanics of stroke on a rowing machine and in a single scull.  Participants in the adult kayaking classes were taught form and techniques of kayaking.

Teen Movie Night:  Teen Movie Night kicked off on Saturday, September 7, with nine middle school students watching "The Amazing Spiderman."  Tomorrow's Movie Night will be a showing of "Oz the Great and Powerful."  Movie Nights are held at the Coronado Club Room and Boathouse located at 1985 Strand Way, from 6 to 9 p.m., and are free to all middle school students.


Wayfinding Signs:  The City Council soon may consider installing wayfinding signs to increase the number of people walking through Coronado's commercial corridor. The directional signs will help people find their way to shopping, hotels, the beach and other popular attractions. The signs will be designed to be safe, aesthetically pleasing and helpful to visitors and residents.  

Smoking Ordinance:   The City Council will consider at a future meeting the introduction and implementation of an ordinance that would prohibit smoking in most of the City, including on outdoor dining areas on public property. 

Coronado Cays Entrance Public Meeting:   A third public workshop on possible changes to the intersection of the Bayshore Bikeway and the Coronado Cays is being planned. Stay tuned.
