Coronado Police Recognized by SEALs

Coronado, CA (September 13, 2011) - The Coronado Police Department was recognized by SEAL Team 5 Commander Michael McAbee at a 9/11 ceremony held Friday, September 9, at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado.

The Police Department was presented with a plaque by SEAL Team 5 for its hard work in providing support during the three days of services held for SEALs Jesse Pittman and Darrick Benson, who were killed in Afghanistan.

Police Commander Mike Lawton said Commander McAbee wanted to let everyone know here how much it meant to the families of the men that officers cleared the road for them and provided an escort for the funeral procession to Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

He said the families were pleased that local law enforcement would provide that level of care to their sons.  Commander McAbee said he also appreciated that our personnel lined up and honored and respected them by saluting as their processions passed each day

A personal note of appreciation was passed along to those officers who helped plan or participated in the services. The plaque will be moved to the front lobby display case.  It reads: "Thank you for your hard work and support."

Lawton also thanked Coronado officers for their compassion toward members of the military: "Your professionalism shines."
