Coronado Conducted Test of Sirens

All Three Emergency Sirens Worked Properly

 

 

CORONADO, CA (April 17, 2014) – The Coronado Fire Department conducted a test of the City's Emergency Siren Warning System today and all three sirens sounded properly then turned off as scheduled. The test was part of a routine test of the City of Coronado's emergency sirens that occurs every year in April.

It is a good time for all residents and businesses to be aware of the sirens and other emergency procedures in Coronado. The test is conducted to ensure the City's three sirens are in working order. All three – one each at the Village Fire Station; Glorietta Bay Park; and the Coronado Cays Fire Station -- were activated at 10:30 a.m. to ensure they are in top working order.  

The City of Coronado installed the system in 2002 to alert the community in the event of an emergency. The warning sirens are designed to be heard from all locations within the  City of Coronado.  Once activated, the sirens will sound from one to three minutes. In the event of an actual emergency, Fire officials ask the community to remain calm and tune the radio to AM 600 (KOGO) to receive specific instructions.

The County of San Diego's Office of Emergency Services is responsible for providing information to the local radio stations once they have received updates from the City.  The use of our emergency sirens is just one of the notification systems the city will use in the event of a disaster. 

In addition to the sirens, the City will provide notification to citizens in the event of an actual emergency using the AlertSanDiego system. Through the system, local authorities would send telephone notifications to residents and businesses that may be impacted by, or in danger of being impacted by, an emergency or disaster. This system is used by emergency response personnel to notify those homes and businesses at risk with information about the emergency and any actions, such as evacuation, they will be asked to take. The system uses the region's 9-1-1 database, provided by local telephone companies, to reach all land-line telephones and any registered cell phones or email addresses. The City of Coronado also has a Twitter account, @CoronadoCity, a Facebook page, City of Coronado, and uses Nixle (sign up at https://local.nixle.com/register/) that it will use to relay important information in the event of an actual emergency.
