Attend the Inaugural Trip Friday at 9 a.m. at City Hall

CORONADO, CA (July 2, 2013) - City leaders and officials with the Metropolitan Transit System invite the community to join them Friday in front of City Hall, 1825 Strand Way, for the launch of Coronado's free Summer Shuttle bus service.

The public is invited to preview two brightly decorated Summer Shuttle buses before boarding for a loop around Coronado's scenic Village area. The buses will be parked in front of City Hall. Brochures that include a map, with major stops along the way highlighted, will be provided to guests and distributed around town. The Summer Shuttle bus will depart at 9:03 a.m. for its inaugural trip down Orange Avenue, where there will be a stop for refreshments and an introduction to the service by local dignitaries at the Coronado Ferry Landing.

Summer Shuttle Bus Service Launch Schedule:

  • 8:45 a.m.         Preview Summer Shuttle Bus/ Ribbon Cutting
  • 9:03 a.m.         Summer Shuttle Inaugural Trip Begins
  • 9:15 a.m.         Arrive at Coronado Ferry Landing, Refreshments Served
  • 9:45 a.m.         Depart Coronado Ferry Landing for Return to City Hall

The Coronado City Council agreed to fund the free Summer Shuttle bus service from July 5 through September 30. The cost is $54,000. The local MTS 904 bus will be converted into the free summer shuttle bus, which will serve the area between the Civic Center and the Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa. MTS will continue its financial support for the existing 904 route.

Each bus will be "wrapped" with special graphics that promote Coronado and the most popular shuttle destinations such as the Hotel del Coronado, Historic Downtown, Ferry Landing and the Marriott.  Special bus stop signs will be installed and promotional material will be made available to local hotels and businesses to promote the free shuttle.

Two Summer Shuttle buses are being outfitted with the wrap design and will run every 30 minutes from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. seven days a week, with an extra hour on Friday and Saturday nights. The Summer Shuttle doubles the frequency of the current 904 bus service route. The new service provides four more hours of daily service to the 904 route by beginning one hour earlier and remaining in operation three hours later.

Look for the Summer Shuttle bus in the Fourth of July Parade Thursday. The free service begins Friday.
