Scenic Bike Loop Rolling Along

Coronado, Calif. (May 7, 2013) - Coronado is working on the next phase of its Scenic Loop for bicyclists that, once completed, will take riders on a more protected ride around the City's Village area.

The idea for the Coronado Scenic Loop came from a group of residents and bicycling enthusiasts, many of whom would later become members of the City's Bicycle Advisory Committee. The group felt it would be nice for residents and visitors to be able to safely ride their bikes around the Village from the bay to the ocean and back on a designated bike route. Another benefit would be the traffic-calming effect painted lanes would have along the route.

The City Council today authorized staff to put the project out to bid. The Coronado Scenic Loop is estimated to cost $192,000 and will be paid using funds provided through a grant from the California Department of Transportation, which has been secured.

The group of residents and avid bicyclists met monthly for about a year starting in mid-2010 to discuss the creation of a bicycle master plan, which included a scenic loop and other bicycling-related projects and goals. The City Council adopted its Bicycle Master Plan in March 2011 and six months later agreed to move forward with forming the Coronado Bicycle Advisory Committee.

The Committee is charged with advising the City and staff on bicycle-related matters, coordinating and hosting bicycle education programs and events, and evaluating the City's efforts in implementing its Bicycle Master Plan.

After several public meetings and approval by the Bicycle Advisory Committee, the City Council gave the go-ahead to staff to formally request the Caltrans grant funding for the Scenic Loop in April 2012. The City Council accepted the grant funds in February.

Work on the Scenic Loop may begin as early as July. Residents will be updated as the project proceeds with flyers, mailers and notices.

Although the process has been long, it has been thorough. The project, as proposed, would install a combination of bike lanes and routes around the perimeter of Coronado's Village area to create a scenic loop for bicyclists to enjoy.
